Where we started from?

“What do I like to do?” That was the most critical question. During the year and a half of army duty, it was definitely a different lifestyle from student life. Ironically, I would say that separation from the outside world brought me freedom of thinking. I asked, “What do I really like to do?” The answer was in the question. Long story short, I decided to travel around the world. After a year of traveling, especially during the 3-month road trip around Australia with three other random friends, I felt more connected to automotive. Yeah, automotive engineering.

After coming back to university in 2023, I was lucky to meet new colleagues who were passionate and enthusiastic about their studies. And I would say it was the ticklish moment for “Automotive software engineering.” We were all interested in it, but we didn’t know how to start. One day, during the spring semester, a startup company in Berlin, Germany called VEECLE popped up in my algorithm. I was shocked. “All cars. One Software.” I emailed the co-founder of VEECLE. She texted me back, “Come on and have a look.” Wow! I was thrilled. During that summer of 2023, after finishing summer school in France, I went straight to Berlin, where the VEECLE headquarters is located. Sohyeon Park, the co-founder of VEECLE, and her other teammates welcomed me. We had a chat about automotive software, careers, and life. They were using the Rust programming language for memory safety. That was also interesting. At that moment, I would say I knew almost nothing about software engineering. But then, she suggested, “Why don’t you make some project by yourself? It’s a good way of learning. Maybe you can gather with other colleagues as well.” On my way back to Korea, on the flight, I felt passionate. I still didn’t know exactly what, but I felt something in my heart.

Just before the fall semester began, I founded MiRu, which is the “Automotive Software study and project group.” More than 20 people joined in the first club recruitment, and now about 50 of us are in the group. Since that time, 09.2023, everything has changed.

We, MiRu. Dream Big.
